Ask Atiku Abubakar — Official Citizen Engagement Platform

What is ADC doing to ensure free and fair FCT council elections and future electoral reforms?

Thank you for reaching out, and for the trust you place in me by raising this directly.

On the FCT Council elections, here is what I can tell you about what we, in the African Democratic Congress, are doing. Ahead of the February 21 elections, I joined other party leaders, including Peter Obi, to speak directly with voters across the FCT, including in Gwarinpa and Apo Wasa, about why this election matters and why our candidates are the right choice. We fielded candidates with competence, capacity and character to offer quality leadership across the local councils in Abuja.

I have encouraged voters to come out in large numbers and to defy all forms of intimidation in making their choice. I believe this election says a lot about how ready the managers of our elections are to deliver free, fair and credible polls.

Beyond this election, I have continued to support the efforts of civil society organisations and local and foreign election observation missions, including the EU Election Observation Mission, that are working toward genuine electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 General Elections. My expectation is that the Independent National Electoral Commission will work with the National Assembly to give citizens election laws that guar

The by-election arising from outstanding voting into various legislative positions in the 2023 General Election is billed for Saturday. These elections that cover a wide range of polling units and a few constituencies shall be the last effort by the respective voters in the affected electoral wards to conclude their franchise in the last General Elections. It is my appeal to voters in the Ebonyi South senatorial district to give their unalloyed support to Barrister Silas Onu and, by so doing, vote for the Peoples Democratic Party in Saturday’s by-election. The people of Ebonyi South Senatorial District, the Senate and indeed Nigeria stand to gain from Silas Onu's multiple set skills and the vibrancy of his youth. My appeal goes beyond Ebonyi State and connects with voters in all the 35 constituencies and nine states affected by court-ordered by-elections. I do hope that voters in these states, which include Ebonyi, Yobe, Borno, Kaduna, Benue, Ondo, Taraba, Lagos and Kebbi, shall make a bold statement in the forthcoming election by putting a stamp of rejection on the ruling All Progressives Congress for having made insecurity and impoverishment a policy of the state in all the affected polling units.

Yesterday evening, I received a high-powered European Union delegation, including the Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E Gautier Mignot. The delegation led by Barry Andrews, a member of the European Parliament, who was also Head of the 2023 EU- Election Observation Mission to Nigeria, is engaging in broad-based conversation on the future of Nigerian elections. This visit is a follow-up mission to see the level of implementation of a set of recommendations made by the team following the 2023 General elections. Expectations are high that the Independent National Electoral Commission will urgently work with the National Assembly to give citizens election laws that guarantee transparent and credible elections, where every vote counts. It is worrisome that two years down the line, we are yet to see indications that INEC is committed to an improved electoral process. Meanwhile, we shall continue to support efforts by CSOs, local and foreign Election Observations Missions (EOMs), including the EU-EOM, that will lead to genuine electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 General elections.

This morning, I gladly joined the campaign trail of Dr Moses Paul (Dr Mo), @Drmopaul, the ADC AMAC Chairmanship Candidate in the February 21 FCT Local Council elections. Our first port of call was Apo Wasa. Dr Mo is the kind of Nigerian young people in Abuja can relate to and trust with the future of the Municipal Council. I encourage FCT voters, including those in AMAC, to vote for all ADC candidates in these elections. This would be the first step towards ousting the failed APC government. ADC is undoubtedly the party that will salvage Nigeria, and the surest bet is to start with Dr Mo and AMAC. -AA

This morning, I was in Gwarinpa with other leaders of our party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including my brother, H.E. Peter Obi, ahead of the Saturday, February 21 FCT Council elections. We have been speaking with voters about why this election is important and why ADC candidates should be the right choice. This election is very important. It will say a lot about how ready the managers of our elections are to deliver free, fair and credible polls. It will also say a lot about how ready people are to chase the APC out. I have encouraged voters to come out in large numbers to vote for ADC candidates across all FCT Councils in the elections. Our party has fielded candidates with competence, capacity and character to offer quality leadership across local councils in Abuja. Voters have the responsibility to defy all forms of intimidation and make the right choice. The APC-led Federal Government under Bola Tinubu has failed citizens on many fronts. It has failed to fix the economy. It has failed to fix our education. It has failed to keep our country safe. It has pushed the citizens of a rich nation into deeper poverty. It has allowed criminal elements to hold citizens to ransom.

Will you contest for office, not because you crave a title, but because you believe you have something better to offer? Will you help build the ADC into a political party that is rooted in the people, disciplined in organisation, democratic in character and genuinely open to a new generation? I am asking you to say: This is my country. This is my future. This is my responsibility. I will not outsource it. And if you accept that responsibility, I make you a promise: you will not walk alone. I will listen to you, answer your questions and accept your criticism because I am not asking to be your master. I am asking to be your candidate, your partner and, if Nigerians entrust me with the responsibility, your servant. LET THE RIVER RISE Let me leave you with one image. The River Niger, from which our country takes its name, does not begin as the mighty river we know. It begins small, and as it travels, other streams join it. One becomes ten, ten become hundreds, and what began quietly becomes a mighty river capable of sustaining millions.
