Ask Atiku Abubakar — Official Citizen Engagement Platform

How would you cut off bandits' supply lines and use technology to track and act against them?

I hear your frustration, and I share it. Let me tell you what I am determined to do.

On cutting off bandits' supplies, I am committed to disrupting the financial flows that sustain kidnapping and banditry, ransom payments, laundering channels, and support networks. I will deploy intelligence and financial tracking systems to identify, monitor, and shut down these operations, with strict legal and financial consequences for anyone who facilitates or profits from them. I also want Anti-Banditry and Kidnapping Special Units set up in every state command, made up of highly trained, mobile personnel, so responses on the ground are faster and better coordinated.

On the technology question specifically, I have not set out a plan for tracing videos online or targeting locations from them. What I can tell you is that I am pushing for a "firehose principle" of security coordination, continuous, high-volume intelligence sharing across jurisdictions, including joint planning and real-time coordination between bordering states, so threats are tracked and responded to faster and more effectively.

Condemnation after the fact is not enough. What is needed are proactive, preventive actions. As long as these criminals face no real consequences, they will continue to return to inflict more pain on innocent people. I urge the National Assembly to urgently pass legislation that allows state governments to properly arm and equip their security outfits with modern weapons. This will strengthen our overall security architecture and help relieve the overstretched federal security agencies. At the same time, I must call on community members to reject collaboration with armed groups and instead support our security forces by sharing intelligence. Security is a shared responsibility. I commend the courage and sacrifices of our security forces. Their efforts remain invaluable, but they need the full support of the people and a government that prioritizes security, not just with words but with decisive action.

TINUBU PROTESTED JONATHAN’S FUEL PRICES. FIVE NIGERIANS ARE NOW REPORTEDLY IN CUSTODY OVER “TINUBU MUST GO” T-SHIRTS — ATIKU Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has demanded the immediate release of five Nigerians reportedly arrested in Borno State over T-shirts bearing the words “Tinubu Must Go.” He said that if a political slogan is the reason for their detention, those responsible must explain how wearing a shirt became an offence in a democracy. In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku said President Bola Tinubu once stood with Nigerians protesting fuel prices under President Goodluck Jonathan, but now presides over a cost-of-living crisis that has made the same fuel, along with food, transport and electricity, painfully expensive. “Tinubu opposed Jonathan’s fuel policy in the streets. Nigerians are living with the consequences of Tinubu’s fuel policy in their homes. Parents are cutting meals. Workers can scarcely afford the journey to work. Families are being crushed by bills that rise faster than their income. And when citizens put their anger on a T-shirt, the response is reportedly an arrest. What kind of democracy grants its President the right to protest, then takes that right away from everyone else?” Atiku asked.

My plan to tackle insecurity covers every part of Nigeria, the North West included. I am committed to setting up Anti-Banditry and Kidnapping Special Units in every state command, made up of highly trained, mobile personnel, to strengthen the response to banditry and kidnapping. I also want to adopt a firehose principle for security coordination, driving continuous, high-volume coordination across jurisdictions so we get faster responses and stronger intelligence sharing. On top of this, bordering states will jointly plan operations, share intelligence in real time, and coordinate responses, and I will push for an independent Internal Affairs Agency to investigate misconduct within police and other security services. This is how we rescue your community from banditry, kidnapping, and cross-border crime.
