Atiku Abubakar is particularly passionate about education. He established a Professorial Chair at the Oxford University, U.K, to promote scholarship in African History. His most significant investment in education has been the American University of Nigeria in the northeast Nigeria town of Yola. With the help and cooperation of American University in Washington, DC, the American University of Nigeria in Yola was set up. The AUN has arisen in only thirteeen years from the empty fields of rural Nigeria to become an institution of 1500 students with a faculty from 40 countries, a focus on sustainable development as Africa's first "Development University," and most recently the winner of an award from the American Library Association for its pioneering work in the development of one of the world's most sophisticated e-libraries. It is the only American-style University south of the Sahara and is already recognized as one of the leading universities of West Africa.

Q30: Many intelligent students cannot afford university or even remain in school because their families are poor. What financial support will your government provide? Answer: My administration will provide non-repayable scholarships, grants, and bursaries instead of forcing students into debt, while forgiving existing student loan obligations and directly reducing university tuition costs for low-income families.
ojú ìwé 6 Introduction Atiku Abubakar: Answers to questions from the public 2026-10-02 ›
Q31: Why do Nigerian universities continue to experience strikes, and what will you do to prevent students from repeatedly losing academic time? Answer: To end ASUU strikes, I propose granting genuine financial and administrative autonomy to public universities, I will set up sustainable university endowment funds, and honoring all signed labor agreements. Q32: How will you ensure children in underserved communities gain access to computers, digital skills and the education required for the modern economy? Answer: My policy integrates digital literacy into the primary school curriculum and builds solar- powered ICT laboratories in public schools through partnerships with private technology companies. Q33: How will you make education inclusive for children with disabilities and other children who need additional support?
ojú ìwé 6 Introduction Atiku Abubakar: Answers to questions from the public 2026-10-02 ›
Answer: Public school infrastructure will be upgraded for disability access, provided with specialized learning tools (Braille, assistive devices), and staffed by trained special-education teachers. Q34: Many rural communities have no nearby hospital, while existing health centres lack doctors, medicines and equipment. How will you improve access to quality healthcare? Answer: My plan revitalizes at least one Primary Health Care (PHC) center per political ward, equipping them with essential medicines and solar power, backed by rural posting allowances for doctors and nurses. Q35: Healthcare and medicines are too expensive for many Nigerians. How will you make treatment and essential medicines affordable?
ojú ìwé 6 Introduction Atiku Abubakar: Answers to questions from the public 2026-10-02 ›
Q37: Many communities lack ambulances, emergency services and access to specialist care. How will you improve emergency and specialist healthcare outside major cities? Answer: Regional specialist medical centers will be linked to rural communities via regional ambulance networks and integrated telemedicine services. Q38: Nigerian doctors and other health professionals continue to leave the country. How will you improve working conditionsand retain healthcare workers? Answer: To stop health worker migration, the plan raises health sector pay structures, waives tariffs on imported medical equipment, improves workplace safety, and funds medical research grants. Q39: Fuel is too expensive and is increasing the cost of almost everything. How exactly will your proposed policy for locally refined petrol reduce the pump price for ordinary Nigerians?

The review must prioritise fiscal measures to deal with an unprecedented rise in commodity prices. Higher commodity prices have created more misery for the poor in our towns and villages and have pushed millions of people below the poverty line. One of such measures for immediate implementation will be to ease the existing restrictions on selected food imports. Third, undertake a comprehensive review of the Social Investment Programme (SIP) to mitigate some of the impact of these policies on the most vulnerable households. The SIP must go beyond Conditional Cash Transfers to include programmes that prioritize support to MSEs across all the economic sectors, as they offer the greatest opportunities for achieving inclusive growth. In addition, a holistic programme to support medium and large-scale enterprises to navigate the stormy seas in the aftermath of the withdrawal of subsidy on PMS is also needed.

Poverty is the greatest enemy that humanity has ever known. Wherever it takes root, whether in the life of an individual or across a society, it breeds other troubles like disease, ignorance, insecurity, and hopelessness. The declaration of this day as the International Day for Poverty Eradication is a timely reminder and a call to action. It urges governments, civil society, and every stakeholder to join hands in the fight against poverty in all its forms. In Nigeria, we have sadly earned the label of being among the nations hardest hit by poverty. That is why my advocacy for deliberate, people-centred solutions to end poverty remains strong and consistent. At both government and community levels, we must take the fight against poverty to every home, every community, and every school so that the ordinary Nigerian becomes part of the solution. As a wise Nigerian proverb says, “When the poor man is hungry, peace sleeps outside.” When poverty is defeated, the freedom and dignity of every man and woman will find true meaning. -AA

That must change. When I speak about youth inclusion, I do not mean ceremonial appointments or creating a few positions with impressive titles. I mean real responsibility, political representation, economic opportunity and a genuine voice in government. That is why I make this commitment before you today: under our political programme, we will deliberately open the doors of political leadership to a new generation. At least 30 percent of our legislative candidates will be under the age of forty, and I want to see a significant number under thirty. But that commitment imposes a responsibility on you as well. Opening the door is not enough if those who enter are not prepared to lead. You must study government, understand public finance and policy, learn how institutions work, understand the communities you seek to represent and prepare yourselves for the difficult business of leadership. Do not simply complain about the people making decisions. Prepare yourselves to replace those who are failing you.

Nigeria cannot continue asking competent young people to wait outside the room while their future is being decided inside it. MY COVENANT WITH YOU Our partnership must also mean something practical in the lives of young Nigerians. It begins with jobs and enterprise. Nigeria has millions of young people with ideas, energy and ambition, but too many cannot access the capital required to turn those ideas into businesses. We will expand transparent access to finance for young entrepreneurs, artisans, farmers, technology founders and people working in the creative economy. Your surname, political connection or ability to find a godfather should not determine whether a good idea receives an opportunity to succeed. Education must also change. We cannot continue educating young Nigerians for an economy that no longer exists. Our schools must place greater emphasis on science, technology, vocational education, agriculture, digital skills, critical thinking and entrepreneurship. And no brilliant Nigerian child should be denied tertiary education simply because his or her parents are poor.

Finally, lead. Do not wait indefinitely for permission. Seek leadership positions within this party. Contest elections. Become councillors, legislators and governors. Become entrepreneurs who employ hundreds of Nigerians, journalists who demand accountability, technology founders who solve Nigerian problems, farmers who transform agriculture and teachers who shape the next generation. Whatever path you choose, prepare yourself and pursue excellence. I can help provide the platform and opportunity, but you must bring the competence. There is one other responsibility I place upon you: hold us accountable. Do not become a youth wing that applauds everything its leaders say. If this party deviates from its values, speak up. If people abuse positions entrusted to them, challenge them. If I, as your presidential candidate, fail to live by the commitments I make to you, remind me. A political party that demands loyalty without accountability will eventually reproduce the same failures it condemns in others.

That is how political change happens too. Every young Nigerian who decides that hopelessness is no longer acceptable adds another stream. Every young person who registers, organises and decides to lead adds strength to the current. One person may be ignored, but millions cannot be ignored. One voice may be silenced, but a generation determined to shape its future cannot be wished away. So when you return to your states, local governments, wards, campuses and communities, do not allow the energy of this summit to end in this hall. Take it with you. Organise it. Multiply it. Turn it into participation, ideas, candidates and votes. Let the river rise. Let it rise across every ward, every community and every state until it becomes a democratic current strong enough to carry Nigeria towards the future its young people deserve. For too long, you have been called the leaders of tomorrow. I say again:

Nigeria’s young people do not need a government that teaches them how to survive hardship. They need a government that gives them the opportunity to prosper. The cost-of-living crisis has stripped millions of Nigerians of purchasing power, weakened small businesses and pushed too many young people farther away from jobs, capital and economic independence. My commitment is to change that. We will restore purchasing power, reduce the cost of living and deliberately expand opportunities for young Nigerians, including through a $100 billion financing programme for start-ups and entrepreneurs. Our objective is simple: move young Nigerians from dependence to enterprise, from unemployment to productivity, and from palliatives to prosperity. It was against this background that I was pleased to receive, this afternoon, a nationwide delegation of N-Power beneficiaries who came to declare their support for my presidential candidacy.

Atiku said the relationship between energy costs and household welfare was precisely why his economic programme placed affordability at its centre. The World Bank has previously noted that higher petrol prices reduce household purchasing power directly and can also feed through into the prices of other goods and services, particularly transportation. “When fuel becomes expensive, transporting tomatoes from the farm becomes expensive. Taking rice to the market becomes expensive. Moving children to school becomes expensive. Running the neighbourhood grinding machine becomes expensive. Powering the small shop becomes expensive. “And eventually, the additional cost arrives at the dinner table. “That is why I refuse to accept an economic philosophy in which government simply watches prices rise and tells struggling citizens to endure.” Atiku reiterated that his proposed petroleum intervention is a production subsidy, rather than a return to subsidising imported petrol. His published proposal provides for targeted support tied to crude refined domestically, with the intervention capped, transparently budgeted and independently audited.
