As we mark the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nigeria, we are reminded that the scheme remains one of the most significant policies ever conceived in the country. We must also acknowledge and give credit to General Yakubu Gowon for introducing this brilliant idea aimed at consolidating national unity after the bitter memories of the tragic Nigerian civil war. Unity, which is also my agenda as a politician, is essential to building a strong country because a divided country is a weakened country. I also use this opportunity to call on politicians, religious leaders and other opinion leaders to continue to encourage unity among the people because disunity feeds hate, which in turn, feeds conflicts. We should always make utterances that promote love and unity and avoid statements that stoke bitter divisions and intolerance. At the same time, I urge a review of the mandate of the NYSC scheme to reflect the demands of the current reality. -AA

The praises of the administration in which I served as number two man and chaired several committees and initiatives are well in order and one of our strengths in power was always the ability to listen to divergent opinions – to disagree without being disagreeable. Through various political formations over the years, I have observed that affording opposing forces the political space to thrive is never a flaw, but a strength that enriches democracy in that our best ideas are then tested and subjected to various viewpoints, leading to refinement and superb execution. As a foremost leader in the political space, I understand the frustration of a younger generation with a country of so much promise, so little delivery and a gloomy outlook for the future. I have, however, been strident in calling for restraint and leading by example by not unnecessarily heating up the polity. Where opposition freedoms are, however, under threat or even the appearance of threat, we, as Democrats and Patriots, have a duty to speak up.

This quest is not for or about Atiku Abubakar. It is a quest for the enthronement of truth, morality, and accountability in our public affairs. In line with this, therefore, I am calling on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, our religious leaders, our traditional leaders, our community leaders, our political leaders, and in particular, Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP and, the leaders of every political party in Nigeria, and, indeed, every single person who loves this country, as I do, and who wishes nothing but the best for the country, as I do, to join me in this campaign to enshrine probity, accountability and the basic principles of justice, morality and uprightness in our country and in our government. This is a task for each and every one of us. Thank you for listening. May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This evening, I had the pleasure of visiting the Abuja residence of Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, where he autographed and presented me with copies of books he personally authored, including "Driven by Revelation and Inspiration: My Aspiration Journey in the 2023 Presidential Election and Matters Arising", written to mark his 75th birthday anniversary. I will take time to read the books. I believe there is a lot to learn from them. Mazi Sam is more than a political associate and an established entrepreneur. He is my friend. In 2023, he was a fellow presidential aspirant under the PDP. When I won the party's ticket, he supported me and worked in the Presidential Campaign Council as my adviser on the Private Sector. We share the passion of seeing a better Nigeria where institutions and systems work for citizens to realise their individual dreams and aspirations. Mazi is one of our country's leading entrepreneurs who drive Nigeria's private sector growth. With his wealth of experience and success in the private sector, I always find him extremely resourceful and appreciate his thoughts on how to move our nation forward. I am elated that he finds our shared aspirations for a better Nigeria worthy of our friendship.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, as I begin to conclude, I need to raise another important issue: the future of the North. What kind of future do we wish to leave behind? •Considering the world of the 21st century, where knowledge is the greatest capital, how will the North survive without quality and purposeful education? •Looking at our demographics, what is our vision of the future? By UN projections, Nigeria will be 300 million in 2030 and well over 400 million in 2050, which will make it the third most populated country after India and China. •How do we feed this population, if today we are battling with huge grain deficits? •How do we educate this population and provide health care? •How do we provide jobs for the teeming youth in their hundreds of millions? These are the critical questions we need to address for these are the big issues for every community around the world today. We have to face them and deal with them or resign to the consequences, God forbid. The competitive environment of the 21st century will not accept complacency, it will not accept absentee leadership, and worst of all, it will not accept a leadership without vision or direction.

In the movement we built together, Shehu taught us that leadership must never become an instrument of privilege; it must remain a vessel of service. His vision was one of inclusion to give ordinary Nigerians a voice in decisions that shape their daily lives; to make unity not just a word in our national anthem, but a lived experience for all. He saw leadership not as an inheritance but as a divine calling of stewardship. His was a discipline forged in humility and refined in the crucible of duty. In times of power, he remained modest. In moments of loss, he remained steadfast. In the solitude of imprisonment, he remained defiant. When Shehu spoke of leadership, he envisioned it as mentorship, a relay where each generation hands the baton forward, not dropped in fatigue nor corrupted by greed. The leadership baton we inherited is heavy. It carries dreams unfulfilled, hopes deferred, promises betrayed. Yet, it is ours to lift again, stronger and purer.

He believed that partnership between generations, and between leaders and citizens is the path to progress. That belief must live again through us. So, to every young Nigerian listening today, let me say this: You are not powerless. You cannot be spectators in your own nation’s story. You MUST be the authors, the dreamers, the doers, and the builders of a new Nigeria. I urge our youths to rise, not in anger but with resolve. Let us heal our divisions with dialogue, not silence. Let us remember that our diversity is not a curse - it is our greatest blessing. This is the time to transform Shehu’s vision into a living reality. Our youths must become the generation that dared to finish what others began. You have to prove that the union Shehu hoped for can indeed be the union we become. Carrying the Torch Forward. As one who shared his journey, I can testify that Shehu never saw democracy as an abstract ideal. To him, it was the practical realization of dignity - the power of people to decide their own fate.

Fellow citizens, where the APC government offers meaningless renewed hope, we will provide renewed action to repair the damage that they have done to our economy and society in the last twelve years of misrule. My dear friends, we have gone through great challenges to build this coalition. Let us now turn our energies to continuing to build this party as we prepare for the campaign to win the elections and to rescue this country from the current misrule. We have a sacred responsibility to build a party that will stand as a great institution not only in Nigeria but as a great example to the world. I, therefore, appeal to all those who feel aggrieved to come back to our party and close ranks with the rest of us. I appeal to all those who contested for various positions in our primaries to close ranks with us. In particular, I invite Chief Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to join me in this fight to save our democracy and our country. As I said previously, there are no winners and no losers. Our people look up to us for leadership. I am ready to lead. I shall work with you all to continue to build our party. I will campaign with you and, if Nigerians give us the mandate, govern with you to build a country that works for all.

But, my dear young Nigerians, restoring democracy was only the beginning. Democracy is not merely about conducting elections. Democracy must create opportunities. It must protect lives. It must reward enterprise. It must give every young Nigerian confidence that hard work, not connections, will determine success. That is where our country has fallen short. Successive administrations have failed to build consistently upon the democratic foundation that was laid. Institutions have weakened. Public trust has diminished. Corruption has become entrenched. Insecurity has spread into communities that once knew peace. The economy has become increasingly difficult for families and businesses alike, leaving millions of young Nigerians wondering whether their dreams still have a place in their own country. That is why I accepted the responsibility of offering myself once again to serve our nation. I am not seeking office for its privileges. I am seeking it because I believe Nigeria can still become the country we all know it is capable of becoming, a nation where leadership is accountable, institutions are strong, opportunities are abundant and every citizen, regardless of background, has a fair chance to succeed.

Different languages. Different cultures. One reality. No Nigerian youth wakes up hoping for unemployment. No Nigerian parent dreams of sending a child to an unsafe school. No entrepreneur prays for higher inflation. No family wishes to live in fear. Our shared challenges must produce a shared purpose. The Nigeria we seek will never be built on ethnic suspicion or religious division. It will be built by citizens who understand that our diversity is a strength—not a weakness. In 2027, let us vote for competence. Let us vote for character. Let us vote for ideas. Let us vote for the future. Mandate Number Three: Become Builders of a New Nigeria. I ask you today not merely to support a candidate. I ask you to build a movement. A movement founded on ideas. A movement rooted in integrity. A movement committed to peaceful democratic change. Go back to your communities. Go back to your campuses. Go back to your workplaces.

Become the generation that builds it. Do not merely criticise bad leadership. Prepare yourselves to provide good leadership. Do not merely ask what Nigeria can become. Ask what history will say about your generation. History presents every generation with a defining moment. This is yours. Years from now, your children will ask where you stood when Nigeria stood at the crossroads. They will ask whether you accepted hopelessness as your destiny. Whether you watched from the sidelines while others decided your future. Or whether you stood up peacefully, organised responsibly, voted courageously, and helped change the course of your nation. My generation has carried the baton this far. Today, with confidence and hope, I place that baton in your hands. Carry it with courage. Carry it with discipline. Carry it with integrity. Carry it with patriotism. Build a Nigeria where talent triumphs over tribe.

That is part of the Nigeria we must change—a Nigeria where there is one standard for those in power and another for everyone else. Now, I want everyone in this hall to do something else for me. Look to your left. Now look to your right. Remember the faces you have just seen, because the people sitting beside you are not strangers. They are your partners in one of the most important assignments before our generation: building a Nigeria that works for everyone. I stand before you today not simply as a presidential candidate asking for your support. I stand before you as a Nigerian who believes that our young people have waited long enough. For decades, young Nigerians have been told to be patient, to wait their turn, and to prepare themselves because they are the leaders of tomorrow. But tomorrow has been promised to Nigerian youths for too long. Your time is not tomorrow. Your time is now.

Will you contest for office, not because you crave a title, but because you believe you have something better to offer? Will you help build the ADC into a political party that is rooted in the people, disciplined in organisation, democratic in character and genuinely open to a new generation? I am asking you to say: This is my country. This is my future. This is my responsibility. I will not outsource it. And if you accept that responsibility, I make you a promise: you will not walk alone. I will listen to you, answer your questions and accept your criticism because I am not asking to be your master. I am asking to be your candidate, your partner and, if Nigerians entrust me with the responsibility, your servant. LET THE RIVER RISE Let me leave you with one image. The River Niger, from which our country takes its name, does not begin as the mighty river we know. It begins small, and as it travels, other streams join it. One becomes ten, ten become hundreds, and what began quietly becomes a mighty river capable of sustaining millions.
