Ask Atiku Abubakar — Official Citizen Engagement Platform

What is your vision for Nigeria's future, and what role should citizens play in achieving it?

Thank you, and ameen to your prayers.

What I want you to hold onto is this: the promise of this country lives in ordinary hopes. A meal your family can afford. A safe road home. A child free to learn. Work that offers a real path to a better life. None of that is extravagant. None of it is beyond our reach.

I have said the Promised Land is not reached just because it can be seen from the villa. Nigerians must be able to get there. That is the course we have chosen, peacefully and together, through the power of our votes.

I ask you not merely to support a candidate, but to build a movement. A movement founded on ideas, rooted in integrity, committed to peaceful democratic change. Go back to your community, your campus, your workplace, and carry that message.

And I ask you to keep questioning me. Demand plans that can be examined and promises that can be measured. Protect your vote and refuse intimidation. That is how we decide, together, whether we are truly moving forward.

2026 is the year to till the soil. 2027 is the year of harvest. It is too late to turn back. Let us rise, organize, and reclaim our country. May Almighty Allah grant us wisdom, strength and victory, for you, your family, and for Nigeria.

BOLA TINUBU CALLS IT PROSPERITY BUT NIGERIANS CAN BARELY AFFORD TO LIVE Being the text of speech delivered by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, GCON,Waziri Adamawa, Vice President of Nigeria (1999-2007), and African Democratic Congress’ Presidential Candidate for the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria, on the occasion of Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the African Democratic Congress Headquarters, Abuja. My fellow Nigerians, Sixty-six years after independence, millions of Nigerians are fighting for things a free country should never put beyond their reach: food on the table, a wage that lasts the month, and a safe journey home. The past three years under Bola Tinubu have plunged Nigeria into the most severe cost of living crisis in our history. Families are not merely tightening their belts. They are skipping meals, delaying treatment and borrowing to survive until payday.

Our founders did not win sovereignty so that a few could prosper while millions merely survive. Their promise lives in ordinary hopes: a meal a family can afford, a safe road home, a child free to learn, and work that offers a path to a better life. Those hopes are neither extravagant nor beyond Nigeria’s reach. Bola, the Promised Land is not in sight merely because you can see it from the villa. Nigerians must be able to reach it. We have  chosen a different course, peacefully and together, through the power of our votes; the message is clear: Tinubu must go. Happy Independence Day. May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Atiku Abubakar, GCON Presidential Candidate, African Democratic Congress.

Wa alaikumu salaam, and welcome. I'm glad to have you here. This platform, Ask AA, is one I have built as a public information portal, a place for Nigerians to engage with me directly on government policies and initiatives. It will grow into a Presidential Promise Tracker, where you can monitor the promises I make, follow how they are being implemented, and see exactly how public funds are being spent. That is how we build transparency and accountability at every level of government, not by asking you to take my word for it, but by laying the record open for you to examine yourself. I see you, and young Nigerians like you, not as a restless population to be managed or mobilised only at election time, but as the greatest national asset this country has ever produced. The innovators, the farmers, the creators, the engineers, the doctors, the teachers, the entrepreneurs, the artisans, you are the ones proving every day what the Nigerian spirit can do.

I hear what you are describing, and I will not pretend it is a small thing. My plan is clear: end insecurity, bring down the cost of living, create opportunities for every Nigerian, and uphold the rule of law. I have done this kind of work before. In government I led the reforms that returned loss-making government companies to private hands and opened our economy to private investment. I served in the Customs Service from 1969 to 1986, and I have built businesses that today employ thousands of Nigerians. I know how jobs are created, and I bring that experience to this task. I have told Nigeria's young people plainly that they do not need a government that teaches them how to survive hardship. They need a government that gives them the opportunity to prosper. That is the standard I am holding myself to. To the working men and women of this country, including those struggling to find work, I have said you deserve leadership that spends the nation's resources on your welfare, not on opaque mega-projects that serve the well-connected. You deserve a government that measures its success by your living standards, not by the size of its spending, the growth of its debt, or the breadth of its patronage networks.

Different languages. Different cultures. One reality. No Nigerian youth wakes up hoping for unemployment. No Nigerian parent dreams of sending a child to an unsafe school. No entrepreneur prays for higher inflation. No family wishes to live in fear. Our shared challenges must produce a shared purpose. The Nigeria we seek will never be built on ethnic suspicion or religious division. It will be built by citizens who understand that our diversity is a strength—not a weakness. In 2027, let us vote for competence. Let us vote for character. Let us vote for ideas. Let us vote for the future. Mandate Number Three: Become Builders of a New Nigeria. I ask you today not merely to support a candidate. I ask you to build a movement. A movement founded on ideas. A movement rooted in integrity. A movement committed to peaceful democratic change. Go back to your communities. Go back to your campuses. Go back to your workplaces.

Together, we can build a Nigeria that rewards enterprise instead of excuses. A Nigeria that inspires confidence instead of despair. A Nigeria that gives every citizen, not just the privileged few, a genuine opportunity to succeed. That is the Nigeria we must build. That is the Nigeria we must leave for generations yet unborn. CONCLUSION. My dear young Nigerians, The future of our country will not be decided only in Aso Rock. It will not be decided only in party headquarters. It will not be decided only in television studios or on social media. It will be decided in our communities. It will be decided in our schools. It will be decided in our workplaces. It will be decided in our polling units. And above all, it will be decided by ordinary Nigerians who refuse to surrender their future to fear, manipulation or despair. This retreat must not end with inspiring speeches, beautiful photographs and good intentions.

It must become the beginning of a national movement. A movement that educates. A movement that organises. A movement that unites. A movement that inspires. A movement that protects democracy. And a movement that reminds every Nigerian that public office is a sacred trust, not a private inheritance. To our political leaders across all parties, I say this respectfully: Young Nigerians are not merely a voting population to be remembered every four years. They are citizens to be respected. Partners to be engaged. Leaders to be developed. The future custodians of our Republic. Open the doors of leadership to them. Trust them with responsibility. Reward competence above loyalty. Reward integrity above patronage. Create opportunities that allow them to fulfil their enormous potential. To the young Nigerians gathered here today, I leave you with this challenge. Do not merely demand a better Nigeria.

I want a mother to return from the market with more food in her bag. I want a father to pay transport and still have something left in his pocket. I want a small business owner to close for the day with profit, not just enough money to buy fuel for tomorrow. That is what affordability means to me. Less money spent on fuel. Less money spent on transport. Less pressure on food prices. More money left for your family. My promise is personal: I want you to feel relief in your pocket, in your home and in your daily life. I will make life affordable again. I will make Nigeria affordable again. It is a promise. -AA

What we have currently is akin to asking thieves to keep their loot and use the same to defend themselves while the case of their robbery is being decided. It only encourages mandate banditry rather than discourages it. Thirdly, in order to ensure popular mandate and real representation, we must move to require a candidate for President to earn 50% +1 of the valid votes cast, failing which a run-off between the top two candidates will be held. Most countries that elect their presidents use this Two-Round System (with slight variations) rather than our current First-Past-the-Post system. Examples include France, Finland, Austria, Bulgaria, Portugal, Poland, Turkey and Russia, Argentina, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Mozambique, Madagascar and even Liberia where a run-off is expected to hold in the coming days. Fourthly, in order to reduce the desperation of incumbents and distractions from governing and also to promote equity and national unity, we need to move to a single six-year term for President to be rotated among the six geo-political zones. This will prevent the ganging up of two or more geo-political zones to alternate the presidency among themselves to the exclusion of other zones.

It is with great adulation to God and a heart full of gratitude that I join other patriots to welcome Nigerians to the New Year 2024. The past year was definitely a challenging year, but the lessons that we took away from it are what should prepare us for the future that the New Year holds. It is my belief that one of the reasons the Almighty created time and season is for us to take stock of our realities and effect necessary amends. Certainly, many families and businesses already know the intensity of the trying times that we are currently going through - though we could have taken a completely different pathway, had the government been smarter with their policy prescriptions. The rising cost of food items, goods and services, the malfunction in our national economy and the degenerating state of our national and community security are all existential challenges that we have to face squarely in the New Year.

This afternoon, I completed a three-day condolence visit to Daura, Katsina State, where I joined many other sympathisers for the third-day prayers in honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari. Before participating in the larger congregational prayers, I, along with former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, offered special prayers at the graveside of the deceased. Before leaving Daura, I visited Aisha Buhari, the widowed former First Lady, to express my condolences. Once again, may Almighty Allah forgive his sins and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. -AA

Governments come and go; history remains. I therefore call on all patriotic Nigerians to engage, mobilize, persuade, and organize. Prepare to vote, and to defend your votes in 2027. Let us vote out hunger, insecurity, unemployment, dishonesty, corruption, abductions, lies, and propaganda. Nigeria deserves better. Nigerians deserve dignity. 2026 is the year to till the soil. 2027 is the year of harvest. It is too late to turn back. Let us rise, organize, and reclaim our country. —AA

I was at the National Mosque, Abuja, earlier today, where I joined the congregation in prayers for our fallen heroes as the nation prepares to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. Our prayers shall continue to be with the families of members of our Armed Forces who paid the supreme price to make our nation safer. In these solemn moments, we remember that sacrifice with deep appreciation. Indeed, the role our Armed Forces played and continue to play in keeping our nation safe and safeguarding the territorial integrity of our dear country cannot be overemphasised. We remain eternally grateful. May their service to the nation and the sacrifices they made never be in vain. I also had the pleasure of attending the wedding fatiha of the daughter of my late friend, the Ex CG of Customs, Alhaji Ahmed Hamma Kojoli, at the same venue. I congratulate the couple and wish them a happy home. -AA

But I cannot achieve that vision alone. No President, no matter how determined, can rebuild Nigeria without the active participation of its greatest asset—its young people. That brings me to the central message of my address today: The role of young Nigerians in building a new democratic Nigeria. The current political establishment often looks at young Nigerians and sees a restless population to be managed, manipulated or mobilised only during elections. I see something entirely different. I see the greatest national asset Nigeria has ever produced. I see innovators building world-class businesses from laptops and mobile phones. I see young farmers feeding communities despite enormous odds. I see creators, engineers, doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, artisans and professionals proving every day that the Nigerian spirit cannot be defeated. Unfortunately, I also see enormous talent trapped by poor leadership.

Every election season, some politicians suddenly discover that you are "leaders." They give you caps. They give you T-shirts. They give you a little money. They ask you to insult opponents, disrupt campaigns or intimidate voters. But immediately after the election, they disappear. Your phone stops ringing. The promises vanish. And you are left exactly where they found you. Do not mortgage your future to people who remember your name only during campaigns. The greatest service you can render any politician is not fighting for him. It is insisting that he earns your vote through ideas, character, competence and integrity. That is the foundation of every successful democracy. And that is the kind of political culture we must build together. So, the question before us is simple: How do we convert frustration into national renewal? How do we transform the largest youth population in Africa into the greatest democratic movement our continent has ever witnessed?

Where competence triumphs over connections. Where justice triumphs over injustice. Where hope triumphs over despair. Where every child can dream without fear. Where every young person can succeed through hard work. Where every citizen can once again believe that government exists to serve the people. The task before us is great. But the Nigerian spirit is greater. The road ahead may not be easy. But no great nation was ever built by people who surrendered to despair. My dear young Nigerians, the future is not something we inherit. The future is something we build. Let history record that when Nigeria called, your generation answered. Let history remember that when democracy was tested, your generation defended it. Let history remember that when hope seemed to fade, your generation restored it. And let history remember that together, we rebuilt the promise of Nigeria. Nigeria does not need another miracle.

Will you contest for office, not because you crave a title, but because you believe you have something better to offer? Will you help build the ADC into a political party that is rooted in the people, disciplined in organisation, democratic in character and genuinely open to a new generation? I am asking you to say: This is my country. This is my future. This is my responsibility. I will not outsource it. And if you accept that responsibility, I make you a promise: you will not walk alone. I will listen to you, answer your questions and accept your criticism because I am not asking to be your master. I am asking to be your candidate, your partner and, if Nigerians entrust me with the responsibility, your servant. LET THE RIVER RISE Let me leave you with one image. The River Niger, from which our country takes its name, does not begin as the mighty river we know. It begins small, and as it travels, other streams join it. One becomes ten, ten become hundreds, and what began quietly becomes a mighty river capable of sustaining millions.

Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, H.E. Aisha Buhari. Her visit was warm and deeply appreciated. Beyond the courtesies of the occasion, it was also a reminder of the urgent responsibility before all who seek a better Nigeria: to put the welfare, dignity and future of our people first. Across our country, families are being stretched by the rising cost of food, transport, education, healthcare and other basic necessities. Nigerians deserve an economy that rewards hard work, restores opportunity and allows every family to live with dignity and hope. That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again. We must ease the burden, restore hope and Make Nigeria Affordable Again. -AA

The average price of one egg rose from about ₦88 in April 2023 to ₦261 in May 2026. A sliced loaf was about ₦500 in April 2023; by May 2026, the average was about ₦2,000 for a smaller loaf. These may look like small items in a government report. In a family home, they are breakfast. They are the money left for a child’s lunch. If 2023 was the illness, why does your “cure” buy less fuel, fewer eggs and a smaller loaf of bread? No mother struggling to feed her children is asking for “morphine.” No worker spending his wages on transport is addicted to subsidy. They are asking what happened to the savings you promised and when your reforms will bring down the cost of living. My fellow Nigerians, I will not ask you to accept another promise without asking how it would work. Working with my running mate and our partners in the African Democratic Congress, I will pursue a clear purpose: make life affordable again.

The coming election offers us a peaceful way to choose our course. To the young person who wonders whether one vote matters, to the parent who has lost faith in promises, and to the worker who has grown tired of waiting: this country is yours. Listen closely. Question every candidate, including me. Demand plans that can be examined and promises that can be measured. Protect your vote and refuse intimidation. Bola Tinubu says Nigeria has crossed the Red Sea and that there must be “no looking back.” Let him come down from Aso Rock and meet the Nigerians still struggling to get to the other side. Looking back at a government’s record is a citizen’s right. It is how we decide whether those who hold power deserve more time. We have looked back. We have counted what fuel costs, what food costs and what a wage can still buy. We have seen families waiting for relief while government asks for more patience. We have heard promises of prosperity from a President who cannot show millions of Nigerians where to find it.
