Ask Atiku Abubakar — Official Citizen Engagement Platform

What do you think about the government giving tax waivers to businesses while resisting policies meant to lower costs for ordinary people?

I have said this is selective compassion, not economic principle. The same government that routinely grants waivers, tax credits, incentives and concessions to businesses turns around and treats a policy to make production cheaper and life more affordable as dangerous. Intervention is accepted when it benefits powerful interests, but questioned when the goal is to reduce the cost of fuel, transport and food for ordinary Nigerians. That is the hypocrisy I am calling out.

“What kind of government is terrified by a policy designed to make production cheaper and life more affordable?” Atiku said the hypocrisy was even more glaring because the Tinubu administration itself routinely grants waivers, tax credits, incentives and concessions to businesses. “So intervention is acceptable when government gives waivers and concessions to powerful interests, but it suddenly becomes dangerous when the objective is to reduce the cost of fuel, transport and food for ordinary Nigerians? “That is not economic principle. That is selective compassion.
