Atiku Abubakar is particularly passionate about education. He established a Professorial Chair at the Oxford University, U.K, to promote scholarship in African History. His most significant investment in education has been the American University of Nigeria in the northeast Nigeria town of Yola. With the help and cooperation of American University in Washington, DC, the American University of Nigeria in Yola was set up. The AUN has arisen in only thirteeen years from the empty fields of rural Nigeria to become an institution of 1500 students with a faculty from 40 countries, a focus on sustainable development as Africa's first "Development University," and most recently the winner of an award from the American Library Association for its pioneering work in the development of one of the world's most sophisticated e-libraries. It is the only American-style University south of the Sahara and is already recognized as one of the leading universities of West Africa.

Honours
In 1982, at the unusually young age of 36, Atiku was appointed to the enviable position of Turaki Adamawa, a position of honour, and a position of high responsibility. Since then accolades have been bestowed on him from various monarchs across the six geo-political zones of the country. He holds the following titles:
• Waziri of Adamawa (Adamawa Emirate)
• Zege Mule U Tiv (Tiv Nation, Benue State), "Great Shelter of the Tiv Nation", conferred on 27 May 2001
• Sardauna of Ganye (Adamawa State)
• Maiyedero of Lagos
• Ekwueme of Anambra
• Atayese of Ijeshaland

In June 2017, he was elevated Waziri Adamawa, second in command only to the Lamido of Adamawa; the Waziri is one of the highest offices of the Adamawa Emirate and a senior kingmaker. On becoming Waziri he relinquished the title of Turaki Adamawa, which passed to his son, Aliyu.
Rotary International and the National Peace Corps Association of the United States have recognised the former Vice President for matching his passion with his purse. In 2011, the National Peace Corps Association made him the first recipient of its Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award, for his contribution to democracy and to higher education in Africa. "No private business man in Africa has worked harder for democracy or contributed more to higher education than Atiku Abubakar," his citation read. He is a Foundation Fellow of St Antony's College, University of Oxford (Source: St Antony's College, https://www.sant.ox.ac.uk/people/dr-atiku-abubakar/). peeji 2 Introduction Atiku Abubakar: Answers to questions from the public 2026-10-02 ›
In any case, the International Arbitration Tribunal reviewed the evidence before it and did not find merit in calling me to take a stand under oath during its proceedings. That is because I was not involved at all. The N500,000 being mentioned was not quoted as being a bribe. Mr. Leno Akinsanya who sent it, did not call it a bribe. The transfer had absolutely nothing to do with the bid by Akinsanya. Q1: I am a graduate, and I have been unemployed for years. What will your government do to create jobs for graduates and young Nigerians? Answer: My policy focuses on private-sector-led growth targeting up to 3 million jobs annually.

Q30: Many intelligent students cannot afford university or even remain in school because their families are poor. What financial support will your government provide? Answer: My administration will provide non-repayable scholarships, grants, and bursaries instead of forcing students into debt, while forgiving existing student loan obligations and directly reducing university tuition costs for low-income families.

Tinubu’s policy on age limit for tertiary education admission belongs in the Stone Ages.
The recent policy of the Federal Ministry of Education pegging age limits for entry to tertiary institutions is an absurdity and a disincentive to scholarship.
The policy runs foul of the notion of delineation of responsibilities in a federal system of government such as we are pratising, and gives a graphic impression of how the Tinubu government behaves like a lost sailor on a high sea. Otherwise, how is such anti-scholarship regulation the next logical step in the myriad of issues besetting our educational system?
To be clear, the Nigerian constitution puts education in the concurrent list of schedules, in which the sub-national government enjoys more roles above the federal government.
Therefore, it is extra-constitutional for the federal government to legislate on education in a manner similar to a decree.

Nigeria’s young people do not need a government that teaches them how to survive hardship. They need a government that gives them the opportunity to prosper.
The cost-of-living crisis has stripped millions of Nigerians of purchasing power, weakened small businesses and pushed too many young people farther away from jobs, capital and economic independence.
My commitment is to change that.
We will restore purchasing power, reduce the cost of living and deliberately expand opportunities for young Nigerians, including through a $100 billion financing programme for start-ups and entrepreneurs.
Our objective is simple: move young Nigerians from dependence to enterprise, from unemployment to productivity, and from palliatives to prosperity.
It was against this background that I was pleased to receive, this afternoon, a nationwide delegation of N-Power beneficiaries who came to declare their support for my presidential candidacy.
