Innalillahi Wa'inna Ilaihir Raji'un. I am saddened by the passing of Hajia Aya Dada Yar’Adua, mother of my late mentor, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua, late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, among others. In the absence of my beloved mother, I adopted Hajiya Dada as a mother. Indeed, she was a mother of multitudes, as her home was always a place of refuge where she welcomed everyone with love. She will be sorely missed. On behalf of the Atiku Abubakar family and team, I express my profound condolences to the Yar’Adua family, friends and associates over the loss of this gem of inestimable value. My condolences also go to the government and people of Katsina State. May her sins be forgiven and that she be granted Aljannah Firdausi. Ameen. -AA

Our responsibility now is to ensure that his labour was not in vain. We must continue the fight for transparent governance, for institutions that serve citizens rather than exploit them, and for a political culture that honours merit above mediocrity. For that is the union he hoped to build, and it remains the union we must become. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, as we conclude this memorial, let us remember that to celebrate Shehu Musa Yar’adua’s life is to renew our contract with the Nigerian dream he served. To his family, may the Lord continue to comfort and strengthen you. To his friends and comrades, let us remain faithful to the ideals we once pledged to uphold together. To the younger generation, know this: freedom and justice are never given; they are earned by courage, by conviction, and by sacrifice. May the Almighty God bless the memory of General Shehu Musa Yar’adua; soldier, statesman, and servant-leader. May He bless the Yar’adua Foundation for keeping faith with his legacy. And may He bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Atiku described as extraordinary the reported announcement by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, that he had secured Tinubu a seat “not too far from where the US President, Donald Trump, will be seated.” “The seat was secured, but the President disappeared,” Atiku said. “If proximity to President Trump was considered such a diplomatic achievement, why did Tinubu abandon the opportunity and send his deputy? Why celebrate securing a strategic seat for the President when the President had no intention of occupying it? “That contradiction becomes even more scandalous when Nigerians remember that Tinubu’s administration committed up to $9 million of Nigeria’s scarce foreign exchange to American lobbyists supposedly hired to improve its standing before the government and people of the United States. “What exactly did Nigerians purchase with that money? Why spend millions of dollars lobbying Washington while Tinubu repeatedly stays away from New York? Why hire lobbyists to speak for Nigeria in America when the Nigerian President cannot summon the courage to appear at the world’s biggest diplomatic gathering on American soil?

The former Vice President reiterated his commitment to policies designed to reduce the cost of living if elected president, including a targeted production subsidy for petroleum products refined in Nigeria, rather than a return to an open-ended subsidy on imported fuel. He said the policy would be structured to support domestic refining, eliminate waste and ensure that government support translates directly into lower prices for consumers. “My promise to make life affordable again is not a political slogan. It is a solemn covenant with the Nigerian people. “We will support what Nigeria produces. We will support fuel refined in Nigeria, create Nigerian jobs and insist that every naira of government support delivers a measurable benefit to the consumer. “The purpose of government is not merely to announce reforms. The purpose of government is to make life better for the people.” Atiku said Nigeria’s young people deserve classrooms, skills, jobs and opportunities that allow them to fulfil their potential rather than an economy that leaves survival increasingly dependent on dangerous and uncertain livelihoods.
Why have you moved between political parties several times, and why should Nigerians see those moves as a matter of principle rather than political convenience or personal ambition? Atiku Abubakar: Answers to questions from the public 2026-10-05 ›
Question: Why have you moved between political parties several times, and why should Nigerians see those moves as a matter of principle rather than political convenience or personal ambition? Answer: Political parties, in practical terms, are a vehicle for contesting for political offices in a party-system democracy. That is the primary purpose of the political party. Unfortunately, our democracy in Nigeria has not matured to the point where whoever becomes president is subject to the supremacy of the party. Often, the president takes the reins in the ruling party and often constricts opposition from within, leaving no room for what we call internal democracy. In such situations, it becomes impractical for me to remain in the party knowing full well the party has become a one-man dictatorship. I don’t play the yes-man politics. I believe in competitive politics.

INTRODUCTION Nigeria is at a defining moment where the choice is no longer between reform and stagnation, but between a system that works for the people and one that continues to fail them. For too long, economic reforms have come at the expense of the people, governance has drifted away from accountability, and systems meant to serve citizens have instead constrained opportunity. This manifesto is built on a clear and deliberate philosophy: that the purpose of government is to work for the people and that reform must deliver real improvements in everyday life. Its goals are simple and urgent: i) to end insecurity across the nation; ii) bring down the cost of living; iii) create more opportunities for Nigerians, and iv) ensure strict adherence to the rule of law. This manifesto is anchored on three fundamental principles: i) That every policy, from economic reform to security to social protection, must be measured by its impact on citizens; ii) That Nigeria's challenges are structural and require coordinated, institutional solutions, not ad hoc interventions; and iii) That reform is necessary, but it must be sequenced, supported, and humane, ensuring that Nigerians are not pushed further into hardship in the process.
