It was an honour hosting Sir Ignatius Ameh, my friend and classmate from the School of Hygiene, Kano. There was a lot of catching up and fond memories of our time in school. -AA

The action of the Federal Government in deploying soldiers in Kano in the tussle over the throne of the ancient city is an upset to the peace and security of the state and also in breach of the 1999 Constitution as Amended. In performing their constitutional duties of law-making, the Kano State House of Assembly (KSHA) passed the amended Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 in consonance with the provision of Section 4 of the Constitution 1999 as Amended, whereas the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf subsequently signed the bill into law. The law, therefore, repealed the 2019 version, which balkanised the ancient Kano Emirate into five. The foregoing circumstances happened within the confines of the law and in compliance with the powers conferred on the Governor as provided by Section 5(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended; and also in consultation with the Kingmakers of Kano, reappointed Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (also known as Muhammadu Sanusi II) as the 16th Emir of Kano State and accordingly handed him a letter of appointment.

It is surprising that in the early hours of today, at or about 5:30 am, the former Emir of Kano, His Majesty Aminu Ado Bayero, backed by Federal might, made their way into the Nasarawa Palace of the Kano Emirate while the reappointed Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II was at the Gidan Dabo, which is the main residence of the Emir of Kano. We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years, and any attempt to destabilise the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted. Recall that when Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned on 9th March 2020, Kano forged on in peace without any fracas. -AA

Earlier today, I had the profound honour of attending the wedding Fatiha of Fahad Dahiru Mangal and Aisha Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano. It also afforded me the opportunity to pay my courtesies to the Emir of Kano, HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II, at whose palace the wedding ceremony took place. May Allah SWT bless the union and keep the historic Kano Emirate peaceful. -AA

I am deeply saddened by today's tragic fire incident at the Sokoto Timber Market (Kasuwar Yan Katako). This large-scale disaster has caused immense loss to hardworking Nigerians whose businesses and livelihoods depend on this bustling economic centre. I extend my profound sympathies to the traders, their families, and the people and government of Sokoto State. I urge the relevant authorities to act swiftly to support the victims and investigate the root cause of the fire to avert the occurrence of similar incidents in the future. Markets like the Sokoto Timber Market are lifelines for many families, and it is critical that we take the necessary steps to safeguard their safety and security. May Allah (SWT) grant strength and comfort to all those impacted. -AA

I am deeply saddened by the devastating fire outbreak that engulfed a recycling hub and market in the Dakata metropolitan area of Kano State early Wednesday morning. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who lost their properties and livelihoods in this unfortunate incident. The destruction of businesses and investments worth billions of naira is a tragic loss, not just for the affected individuals but for the entire community. I stand in solidarity with the victims during this difficult time and urge swift relief efforts to support them in rebuilding their lives. I call on the Governor of Kano State to immediately initiate a full-scale investigation into the cause of this fire to prevent such tragedies in the future. Furthermore, I urge the government to provide emergency relief and long-term support for those affected and implement measures to forestall future reoccurrences. -AA

This afternoon, I received a group of youths, including the Coalition of 19 Northern States Students led by Comrade Sani Danmasani, and the National Association of Kano State Students, led by its President, Ishaku Ali Kanwa. We had a robust dialogue on the state of the nation and education. They applauded my commitment to nation-building, investment in the country's education sector, and youth development. I was elated at their commitment to enthroning a better country and encouraged them not to give up. I assured them that I would join hands with other well-meaning Nigerians to usher in a leadership that would guarantee a better future for citizens. -AA

In the light of the tragic fire at Kano’s Farm Centre GSM Market, which has been confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service to have been caused by a battery explosion, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the affected traders and their families. I also commend the bravery and swift action of the firefighters, whose efforts prevented loss of life and minimised damages. We must urgently address safety in our markets by implementing stricter regulations for the handling of batteries and electrical goods in order to protect livelihoods and save lives. I urge both the federal and state governments to support the affected traders and ensure that such preventable disasters are minimised. -AA

Earlier today, I led a delegation to condole with the family, the people, and the government of Kano over the loss of Alhaji Aminu Dantata. Shortly after visiting the Dantata family, I proceeded to the Government House Kano and was received by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. I expressed sadness over the loss of Alhaji Aminu Danatata. I reminded that as a renowned global entrepreneur, Dantata's demise is not a loss only to the family and the people of Kano, but Nigeria and the world at large. I prayed Allah to grant the deceased Aljannah Firdaus and give the family, the government and people of Kano the fortitude to bear the loss. Governor Abba Kabir expressed happiness at my visit, while using the occasion to thank me for sending a delegation to Saudi Arabia to attend the funeral prayers and burial of the legendary businessman. He reiterated the huge contributions of late Aminu Dantata to the development and growth of the economy of Kano in particular, especially in education and healthcare, saying the loss has left a vacuum, difficult to fill. -AA

It is tragic that in a country blessed with immense human and material resources, millions of our people have been reduced to refugees and beggars in their fatherland. Every responsible government holds the welfare and security of its citizens as supreme. But what we have today is an administration that has abandoned its people. Hunger is killing Nigerians, bandits are massacring communities, yet President Tinubu and his cabinet stand by, unmoved and uncaring. The beauty of democracy lies in the power of the ballot. Oppressed and battered as our people may feel today, they will have the chance to sweep away this inept government at the next polls. That is the power no cabal can take away from the people. At 65, Nigeria remains a giant moving painfully slow on feet of clay, a direct result of decades of poor leadership and wasteful governance. Nonetheless, with the right leadership, our dear country can still rise from the ashes of failed governance to reclaim its rightful place among the comity of nations.

My heart goes out to every trader and family affected by the devastating fire at Singer Market in Kano. The anguish of losing one’s means of livelihood in such a tragic manner is profound, and I stand in solidarity with all who have been impacted. I commend the ongoing efforts of the Kano State Government to provide immediate on-the-ground intervention and support to victims. Such actions offer hope in a period of deep distress. I urge that these efforts be expanded to ensure comprehensive relief, rehabilitation, and stronger preventive measures to safeguard our markets. In times like this, leadership must translate compassion into sustained action. -AA

ATIKU DONATES ₦20M TO FAMILIES OF MINNA CUSTODY DEATH VICTIMS, RESTATES PLAN TO LOWER LIVING COSTS Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday visited Minna, Niger State, where he condoled with His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Farouk Bahago, Emir of Minna and Chairman of the Minna Emirate Council, visited former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), and met with families and survivors of the recent deaths of 37 suspected artisanal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). During his meeting with the affected families, Atiku announced a donation of ₦20 million in support of those who lost loved ones in the tragedy. The former Vice President said Nigeria cannot secure its future without deliberately investing in its young people, expanding opportunities for them and enabling them to pursue legitimate and productive livelihoods.

The former Vice President reiterated his commitment to policies designed to reduce the cost of living if elected president, including a targeted production subsidy for petroleum products refined in Nigeria, rather than a return to an open-ended subsidy on imported fuel. He said the policy would be structured to support domestic refining, eliminate waste and ensure that government support translates directly into lower prices for consumers. “My promise to make life affordable again is not a political slogan. It is a solemn covenant with the Nigerian people. “We will support what Nigeria produces. We will support fuel refined in Nigeria, create Nigerian jobs and insist that every naira of government support delivers a measurable benefit to the consumer. “The purpose of government is not merely to announce reforms. The purpose of government is to make life better for the people.” Atiku said Nigeria’s young people deserve classrooms, skills, jobs and opportunities that allow them to fulfil their potential rather than an economy that leaves survival increasingly dependent on dangerous and uncertain livelihoods.
