Honours
In 1982, at the unusually young age of 36, Atiku was appointed to the enviable position of Turaki Adamawa, a position of honour, and a position of high responsibility. Since then accolades have been bestowed on him from various monarchs across the six geo-political zones of the country. He holds the following titles:
• Waziri of Adamawa (Adamawa Emirate)
• Zege Mule U Tiv (Tiv Nation, Benue State), "Great Shelter of the Tiv Nation", conferred on 27 May 2001
• Sardauna of Ganye (Adamawa State)
• Maiyedero of Lagos
• Ekwueme of Anambra
• Atayese of Ijeshaland
• Zanna Zantaelma of Borno

• Baagbile of Oke Ona Egba, Egbaland

In June 2017, he was elevated Waziri Adamawa, second in command only to the Lamido of Adamawa; the Waziri is one of the highest offices of the Adamawa Emirate and a senior kingmaker. On becoming Waziri he relinquished the title of Turaki Adamawa, which passed to his son, Aliyu.
Rotary International and the National Peace Corps Association of the United States have recognised the former Vice President for matching his passion with his purse. In 2011, the National Peace Corps Association made him the first recipient of its Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award, for his contribution to democracy and to higher education in Africa. "No private business man in Africa has worked harder for democracy or contributed more to higher education than Atiku Abubakar," his citation read. It is with a heavy heart that I received the tragic news of a boat mishap that claimed the lives of over a dozen people and left many others missing in Gurin, Fufore LGA, barely 48 hours after a similar incident in Rugange in Yola South LGA of Adamawa State.
The tragic incidences of boat mishaps are becoming worrisome, considering the frequency of their occurrence in recent times. From Niger, Kwara, and Adamawa to the Niger Delta, it is the same tragic story necessitating the need for the government to pay attention to the development of our inland waterways to ease mobility, boost economic activities, and forestall tragic incidents of boat mishaps. The relevant agencies must take measures to stem these incidents that have become a recurring phenomenon.
May Allah comfort the bereaved families and grant peace to the deceased. My sincere condolences to the government and people of Adamawa State. -AA

During a solidarity visit to Sen. Abdul Ningi, @Sen_AbdulNingi, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, I stressed the importance of preserving the integrity of government institutions if the interests of Nigerians are to be better served and the envisaged development attained.
I assured Sen. Ningi that he is not alone in the battle that earned him a suspension in the Senate. -AA

The judgment of the Supreme Court earlier today affirming fiscal autonomy to local government councils in the country is a win for the people of Nigeria.
The court’s ruling is a step in the right direction and a major corrective action in greasing the wheels of national development across the country.
The decision by the Federal Government to consolidate disbursements of local councils’ revenues into the state government accounts was a decision that was borne out of politics of hasty compromise.
I align with the decision of the Supreme Court that the structure of the Nigerian government is portioned in three layers, and of these, the local governments should be centres of development.
I also share the belief that fiscal autonomy to the local governments should not be limited to revenues from the Federation Accounts, but indeed, should apply to Internally Generated Revenue from the respective local government authorities.
