Ask Atiku Abubakar — Official Citizen Engagement Platform

Dear Mr. President, I would like to ask you two or three important questions. First, what plans and strategies has your administration put in place to address the security challenges affecting the Northern region of Nigeria, particularly the insecurity that continues to threaten the lives and liv

On insecurity in the North, my plan covers every part of Nigeria, the North West and other northern states included. I am committed to setting up Anti-Banditry and Kidnapping Special Units in every state command, made up of highly trained, mobile personnel, to strengthen the response to banditry and kidnapping. I will adopt a firehose principle for security coordination, driving continuous, high-volume coordination across jurisdictions so we get faster responses and stronger intelligence sharing. Bordering states will jointly plan operations, share intelligence in real time, and coordinate responses, regardless of regional grouping. I will also push for an independent Internal Affairs Agency to investigate misconduct within police and other security services, and establish joint security task frameworks with neighbouring countries facing the same threats of banditry, kidnapping, and cross-border crime. This is how we rescue your community from these threats.

On improving education for young people, our schools must place greater emphasis on science, technology, vocational education, agriculture, digital skills, critical thinking and entrepreneurship, because we cannot keep educating young Nigerians for an economy that no longer exists. No brilliant Nigerian child should be denied university, polytechnic or college education simply because his or her parents are poor. I am committed to focusing on teacher quality, curriculum relevance, and learning outcomes: recruiting, training, and properly compensating teachers, introducing continuous teacher training and performance evaluation, updating curricula to include digital skills, critical thinking, and practical knowledge, providing learning materials and digital tools, and monitoring learning outcomes through standardized assessments. I also want to reposition the National Youth Service Corps to reflect current national needs and expand opportunities for young people.

On reforms to improve education quality and create jobs for young graduates, I will overhaul technical and vocational education and training curricula in partnership with industry leaders so they match real job market requirements. This means establishing modern vocational training hubs across all geopolitical zones, launching dual-apprenticeship programmes, and standardizing national skill certifications. I am also committed to declaring a state of emergency in technical and vocational education, expanding skills training centres and aligning them with industry needs, providing student loans and financing support so young Nigerians can access this training, and integrating vocational training into secondary education to create multiple pathways for learning and employment. Within the first 100 days, I will declare a national emergency on out-of-school children and convene a National Education Summit to develop and implement a clear action plan. Alongside this, I am determined to expand transparent access to finance for young entrepreneurs, artisans, farmers, technology founders and people in the creative economy, and to put in place a financing programme for start-ups and entrepreneurs, so young Nigerians can move from dependence to enterprise, from unemployment to productivity.
