I support state police. I have said this before: the fear of abuse by governors is real, but that same fear applies to the Federal Police today, and it has not stopped us from keeping a federal force. So abuse is not a reason to deny states what they need to tackle their own peculiar security challenges.
My position is that we must build watertight measures into the law that creates State Police, measures to check abuses, before we roll it out. I have also said that as part of restructuring, policing should move from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent list, so that states get this power under clear national standards and safeguards, not as a free-for-all.
I also believe that on security generally, we need proper accountability and coordination among all our security agencies, with effective leadership, so that no force, state or federal, operates without checks.
