To understand the thinking behind our privatisation policy, you need to have a clear picture of obtained ahead of that period. Before the privatisation policy was a nationalization policy. The government took total control of all business concerns in the country. The consequence of that nationalisation policy is that the government was running those businesses at a loss. So, our government felt it was necessary to stop the waste and return those businesses to the private sector in order to free scarce government resources for social investments like education, health and the rest. So, all the companies that we privatised were running at losses and government could no longer carry on in keeping them. As a matter of fact, the privatisation policy is the most consequential policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria since the return of civil rule in 1999. Not a single one of those companies that were sold to the private sector is traceable to a buyer related to me. None. No member of my family bought any of those companies on my behalf and the same for my friends.
