Ask Atiku Abubakar — Official Citizen Engagement Platform

Will you keep borrowing to pay for major projects?

I will use public-private partnerships to finance major projects instead of relying solely on government borrowing. This is part of how I will manage public debt responsibly, shifting toward borrowing that is strictly for productive investment rather than consumption. I will bring in private investors to finance development with their own capital, while government provides targeted incentives, including tax concessions where appropriate. This will allow us to build infrastructure, create jobs and grow the economy without relying excessively on borrowing.

When I was Vice President, our administration successfully tackled Nigeria’s enormous debt burden. Between 1999 and 2007, Nigeria paid off her entire foreign debt, while we also built savings through the Excess Crude Account. We have done it before, and I am confident that, with fiscal discipline, investment and sound economic management, we can put Nigeria’s finances on a sustainable path again.

Between 1999 and 2007, Nigeria paid off her entire foreign debt while maintaining an unprecedented 6% annual GDP growth. Those were periods of national restoration, and I am very proud of the work President Obasanjo and I did for this nation we care so much for. Facts don't lie.

● Reduce supply-side bottlenecks in transport, energy, and logistics that increase the cost of goods ● Coordinate fiscal and monetary policy to avoid excessive money supply growth while supporting productive sectors ● Use targeted, temporary interventions, such as strategic grain releases, to cushion extreme price spikes without distorting markets ● Promote competition and reduce monopolistic practices that artificially increase prices 3.Manage public debt responsibly without burdening citizens. We will shift from debt accumulation for consumption, to debt used strictly for productive investment that grows the economy and generates returns. ● Prioritize borrowing for infrastructure, industry, and growth-enhancing projects, not recurrent expenditure ● Improve revenue collection efficiency instead of increasing tax burdens on citizens ● Increase transparency in borrowing, ensuring Nigerians can track how debt is used and its impact ● Use public-private partnerships (PPPs) to finance major projects instead of relying solely on government borrowing
